Overview of Cathedral Rock Trail

  • Length: 1.1 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 669 feet
  • Trail Type: Out & Back
  • Difficulty: Challenging

Cathedral Rock Trail is a short (but tough!) hike in Sedona, AZ, that offers stunning views of the picturesque red rocks and the iconic Cathedral Rock. Cathedral Rock is known to be a vortex site that promotes a sense of peace and introspection, but whether you come for the vortex or the views, this hike will be one of the most memorable parts of your trip to Sedona — guaranteed!

The hike to the top of Cathedral Rock is a bit of a rock scramble, and once you reach the rocky sections at the top, you will need to use both your hands and feet to get a firm enough grip. However, the views from the top are absolutely beautiful — you’ll know you’ve reached the end of the trail when you see the “End of Trail” sign. The entire trail is well-marked with basket cairns to help along the way.

Since there are a few sections of this popular trail that are steep and slippery, it’s important to wear good hiking shoes with plenty of grip. Additionally, this trail should only be attempted by experienced hikers — the short length might make it seem deceptively easy, but it does require some athleticism to complete.

Sedona Shuttle

Because of the popularity of some hiking trails in Sedona, Arizona, like Cathedral Rock Trail, the City of Sedona launched a free shuttle service in 2022 called the Sedona Shuttle. The shuttle runs to and from popular trailheads in Sedona (including Soldier Pass and Cathedral Rock) on Thursday through Sunday to eliminate traffic and parking issues at the small lots at the trailheads.

The Cathedral Rock/Little Horse Shuttle departs from the SR 179 Park & Ride every 15 minutes starting at 7 AM and ending around 5:30 PM. The shuttles run continually, so you’ll never have to wait at the shuttle stop for long! View the entire shuttle schedule here to plan your trip to Cathedral Rock.

Cathedral Rock Trailhead Parking Lot

If you plan to hike Cathedral Rock on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday when the shuttle is not running, you can park at the lot at the Cathedral Rock Trailhead, just off Back ‘O’ Beyond Road.

A couple of tips for parking at the trailhead parking lot — this lot is small and does fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving no later than 7 AM to snag a spot. However, remember that this is a short hike (it usually takes hikers an hour or so to complete), so cars will come and go frequently. You will need a Red Rock Pass to park at the trailhead (keep reading for more information on the Red Rock Pass).

Alternative Hiking Trails

If the Cathedral Rock Trailhead is full, don’t stress! Several other hiking trails in Sedona connect with Cathedral Rock, so as long as you don’t mind a longer hike, you can park at these trailheads to access the Cathedral Rock Trail:

  • Little Horse Trail Little Horse Trail is a four-mile out-and-back trail with scenic views of the red rocks, including Cathedral Rock. You will need a Red Rock Pass to park at the trailhead. The Sedona Shuttle that stops at Cathedral Rock also stops at Little Horse Trail.
  • Baldwin Trail Baldwin Trail is a 2.7-mile loop that is relatively flat and a popular spot for hiking, running, and mountain biking. The loop connects to Cathedral Rock, and the entire hike from start to finish is only 3.8 miles. You need a Red Rock Pass to park at Baldwin Trail.
  • Templeton Trail Templeton Trail is a moderately challenging 7.5-mile out-and-back trail that starts at the Bell Rock Pathway. The trail connects with Cathedral Rock for a scenic (but long!) hike through the red rocks. You will need a Red Rock Pass to park at the trailhead.

Helpful Tips for Hiking Cathedral Rock in Sedona

Before you hike Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona, be sure to keep the following tips in mind for a fun, smooth, hassle-free experience:

Purchase a Red Rock Pass

If you plan to park at the Cathedral Rock Trailhead, you must purchase a Red Rock Pass either at the trailhead or online. Passes cost $5 for the day, $15 for the week, or $20 for the year. Alternatively, you can use an America the Beautiful National Parks Pass. You do not need a Red Rock Pass if you take the Sedona Shuttle to the trailhead.

Plan a Sunset Hike

Cathedral Rock is one of the most stunning spots to watch the sunset in Sedona, since the trail’s end faces westward. If you can time your hike correctly, try to finish right when the sun is setting and find a quiet spot to watch the sky light up in vibrant colors… the panoramic views will be worth the climb!

Prepare for Crowds

Cathedral Rock is one of the most popular landmarks in Sedona, so the trail attracts a crowd, regardless of the day, time, or weather. Come with the expectation of sharing the trail with other hikers, and know there will be times when you’ll need to stop and wait for other hikers to pass (especially on narrow, one-way portions of the hike).

Plan Around the Seasons

Cathedral Rock is an unshaded trail, so you’ll be in the sun for most of the hike. That said, avoid hiking in the middle of the day (especially in the summer) to prioritize staying hydrated and cool. Early mornings and evenings are the best times to hike Cathedral Rock.

Pack Light & Wear Good Shoes

Since you’ll do quite a bit of rock scrambling on the Cathedral Rock Trail, wear a small backpack with hiking essentials to keep your hands free. Bring water, wear sturdy hiking shoes, and bring sun protection, like a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
